Week 2 - Assignment 1: Analyze Project Plans and Statements of Work (SOW)

Part I. Identifying and Selecting the Procurement Plan

The Project Management Plan describes how items will be procured during the project. It also presents the approach that will be used to manage vendors on the project. You may retrieve a sample project procurement plan from any industry, such as a federal, state, or municipal entity.

You are then expected to assess and evaluate it for purposes of illustrating your understanding of the procurement plan and process. The PMBOK (2017) notes six main components that make up a plan. So you may assess the plan based on the following factors, or any additional ones that you find to be important:

  • Procurement process

  • Roles and responsibilities

  • Identified procurement needs

  • Timing

  • Change review and approval process

  • Vendor processes

Each component involves specific requirements, and it will be your responsibility to ensure that these are exhibited. If not, you must describe ways in which the plan could increase its value, hence supporting the project’s success.

You may use your PMBOK along with a guide from the Project Management Docs to help you assess any gaps, discrepancies, or hindrances of the plan. Pay attention to the Statement of Work (SOW), as this portion describes the procured items in enough detail to allow prospective sellers to know if they have the capacity to provide products and deliverables to the buyer. Sufficient detail could describe various specifications (i.e., level of quality, quantity desired, period of performance, performance data, and work location). Therefore, you will have to evaluate if this plan provides enough detail for the buyer to present a substantial and feasible SOW.

Part II: Annotating the Selected Procurement Plan

In addition to selecting and evaluating the plan, you will be expected to further vet the procurement plan by uploading and annotating it using the online software tool, Mendeley.

How to Annotate Your Plan?

In order to complete the annotation process of the procurement management plan, go to this online repository to sign up for a free account: https://www.mendeley.com/?interaction_required=true

Upon signing up for the account, become more acquainted with the software by visiting the Read, Search, and Annotate Your Documents area: https://www.mendeley.com/guides/desktop/04-read-highlight-annotate

(“Read, search and annotate your documents”, 2019)

Once you have completed this training overview, then annotate the sample procurement management plan by commenting on the (6) main components that make up the plan. Notate “how” each area addresses the components. If not, describe ways in which the plan could increase its value and support the project’s success. Be sure to annotate each section fully with at least 30 words per annotation, along with references to support where needed. For example, if you annotate and support with a reference, please cite in APA within the boxed area (i.e., Note Tool) of the annotation as seen in the graphic.

Optional: If you are having challenges with this route of annotating, please copy and paste the actual contract, and annotate using the Microsoft Word Review tool. See here for more on annotating in Microsoft Word: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/troubleshoot/word/faq-about-comments-feature-in-word

After you have made all annotations within the document, please screenshot your work or download the annotated document with the enclosed annotations.

Once this document is uploaded in Mendeley or Microsoft Word, you will annotate certain sections by using the following assessment and evaluation areas. You get to practice this process early because the same criteria will be found in Week 5 to assist you in developing a proposal plan of your own. Be sure to cite all supportive material while annotating within the Mendeley repository.

Length: 2-3 pages, not including title and reference pages

References: Include a minimum of 2 scholarly resources.

The completed assignment should address all the assignment requirements, exhibit evidence of concept knowledge, and demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the content presented in the course. The writing should integrate scholarly resources, reflect academic expectations and current APA standards, and adhere to Northcentral University's Academic Integrity Policy.
